Berkey Big Berkey vs APEC ROES-50 — Gravity Countertop vs Under-Sink RO
Editor pick
Berkey Big Berkey
Gravity countertop
APEC ROES-50
Under-sink RO
The fundamental tradeoff
These two systems represent genuinely different philosophies:
Berkey: No installation. No electricity. No plumbing. Water goes in the top, filtered water comes out the bottom. Works anywhere. Keeps minerals. Slower. Has regulatory questions in 2026 (see below).
APEC ROES-50: Under-sink install required. Removes 95–99% of TDS including lead, PFAS, fluoride, arsenic. Also removes beneficial minerals (calcium, magnesium). Faster throughput. NSF 58 certified. Produces flat-tasting water without remineralisation stage.
Neither is objectively better. The right answer depends on your situation.

Our recommendation
Buy the APEC ROES-50 if: You are a homeowner with under-sink access, your primary concern is PFAS, lead, fluoride, or arsenic, and you can handle (or pay for) a 75-minute install. Add the Stage 6 remineralisation cartridge.
Buy the Berkey Big Berkey if: You are a renter, off-grid user, or prepper who needs a no-install, no-electricity gravity filter — and you are outside California and Iowa. Primary concerns should be chlorine, bacteria, taste — not PFAS (no current cert).
If you are in California or Iowa: Black Berkey filters are currently restricted. Buy the APEC or look at the AquaTru Carafe for a countertop RO option.
