What the Brita Standard Pitcher actually filters

The Standard Pitcher uses an activated carbon filter (coconut-based). NSF certifications:

  • NSF/ANSI 42 — aesthetic effects (chlorine, taste, odour, particulates)

That is it. The Standard filter is not certified for lead, PFAS, fluoride, arsenic, or nitrates. The Brita Longlast (Elite) filter adds NSF 53 lead reduction. If lead is a concern, spend the extra $2 per filter and use the Elite.

Who this is actually for

City water, primary concern is taste. You moved into a flat where the water tastes of chlorine. You cannot drill into the wall. You do not want to spend $200. The Brita Standard Pitcher is the correct answer. Not because it removes every contaminant — it does not — but because it solves the problem you actually have for $5/month.

If your tap water report flags lead, PFAS, or fluoride, step up. The Brita Standard is not the tool.

30-day test diary

First fill. Filter requires 15-second rinse plus 2 discard batches. Standard process, no issues.

Chlorine taste: eliminated. Water noticeably cleaner on taste. TDS unchanged at 290 ppm (activated carbon does not reduce TDS).

Filter indicator flashing at day 9 despite not reaching rated 40 gallons. Indicator runs on timer (30 days), not flow. Can reset manually.

Tested for lead using home test kit (Varify). Result: below detection limit at 2 ppb. Our tap water is not a lead-risk area — cannot verify lead reduction from the filter.

30-day close. Filter changed at 40 gallons. Cost: $6 per filter = $18 per quarter = $72/year at 2 fills/day.

What works

  • No installation — works immediately out of the box
  • NSF 42 certified for chlorine, taste, and odour
  • $5/month running cost — lowest cost of any filter type
  • Widely available replacement filters
  • Zero counter or under-sink space required
  • Perfect for renters with no plumbing access

Watch out for

  • Standard filter NOT certified for lead, PFAS, or fluoride
  • 40-gallon filter life means frequent replacement (every 1–2 months)
  • Must remember to refill — no continuous flow
  • Plastic body — not a premium feel
  • Filter indicator is timer-based, not usage-based

The Elite filter is cheaper per year despite costing more per unit. It also adds lead reduction. Buy the Elite unless you are certain your water has no lead risk.
